My name is Amelia Federico, I’m a senior at DSST: Byers High School in Denver, and, like many of you, my life has been turned upside down by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students state noticeable inequities in local schools

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — While most seniors put in the hard work to graduate, educators told WCNC Charlotte that some Charlotte-Mecklenburg high schools give some kids an unfair, easy, last-second advantage to get their diplomas.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — State Superintendent Mark Johnson said North Carolina needs tougher standards for students recovering credits just days before graduation.

"It is a problem if we are simply pushing students through just to put a check next to their name," Johnson said. "That is not fair to students."

How Minneapolis educates its students is at the forefront of some very big potential changes. It's called the comprehensive district design. "It’s important to remember the comprehensive district design is about more than just a model, it’s about academics, equity and sustainability," said Dirk Tedmon with Minneapolis Public Schools.

Our Turn wants the district to hire at least one full-time mental health counselor at every school.
